Upclose with the Songwriter

About my music …

I have been involved with music since I was about three years old, when I began singing harmony (without realizing it) to my mother’s lilting alto as she rocked me to sleep. I worked on my voice for years and have performed solo with my own country band and sung backup at charity concerts for some pretty cool cats – Charlie Daniels, among others. I studied classical piano for years and taught myself the guitar. I have also messed around with the flute, banjo and uke. And although I give myself a solid B as a performer, songwriting is actually my favorite musical expression.

I usually co-created either in a quiet room in the back of an old house-turned-music company on Music Row in Nashville or spread out comfortably across an over-stuffed chair in a private home studio. I was considered a talented wordsmith and often brought finished lyrics to meetings – song ideas that had sprung from my own life and that I had honed at my place in California. The idea was that my writing partner for the day might find something she or he could particularly relate to and then we’d work on it together. Of course, many writers preferred to start from scratch so they could feel like the finished product was truly their own.

That collaborative process was indescribably comforting and often electric, with the ideas for and about a melody line, a particular group of words to express an idea or even just the mood or style of the piece ricocheting back and forth like living lightening. Needless to say, I didn’t write great songs with every partner – sometimes there is no chemistry. But I am quite proud with the body of my work which has so far produced 11 album cuts, a movie song and a documentary song. “More importantly, if you know my music, you know me.”
